# Mailtrap - How do I link my account?

## Overview

To authenticate with Mailtrap, you will need:

1. **API Token** - A token that lets an application send email through the Mailtrap API on your behalf.
2. **API Environment** - Whether this connection sends real email or test email.

This guide walks you through finding each of these values.

### Prerequisites

* A Mailtrap account with a verified sending domain.

### Instructions

#### Step 1: Choose your environment

Decide which environment this connection should use. You select it as the **API Environment** in Step 3:

| Value | Sends to |
| - | - |
| `send` | Real recipients. Pre-selected, so you can skip this step. |
| `sandbox` | A Mailtrap sandbox inbox, so nothing reaches real recipients. |

#### Step 2: Getting your API token

1. Log in to your Mailtrap account and go to [API Tokens](https://mailtrap.io/settings/api-tokens).
2. Click **Add Token**, give it a name, and select the permissions it needs.
3. Copy the generated token. Store it securely — it is only displayed once.

#### Step 3: Enter credentials in the Connect UI

Once you have your **API Token**:

1. Open the form where you need to authenticate with Mailtrap.
2. Enter your **API Token** in the API Token field, and select the **API Environment** you chose in Step 1.
3. Submit the form to complete authentication.

You are now connected to Mailtrap.
